The crucial aspect of apprenticeships is to focus on the long-term context. There’s no point undertaking the intensive training until you’ve decided on the final trade this apprenticeship will set you up for.
Any search under ‘careers advice’ will provide a host of websites to help you plan your career path.
Advice
Once you’ve narrowed down your options and have a target, your next step should be to get some more specialist advice. Discuss this with your teachers or careers advisers. The internet is also bursting with careers advice websites that will provide further background information about the relevant apprenticeships for each trade.
Application
Any employer will be investing time and effort to train you so it’s important to make create a strong resume.
Provide contact details, a list of your studies, achievements and work experience. Also focus on your interests, skills and especially your career goals.
Employer
Now you’ll need to track down that employer. Check out vacancies in your local paper, or the web. There a jobs search websites, and Jobs Service Australia providers in each region. Other resources include Group Training Organisations, or your local Apprenticeship Centre. It can also be worthwhile to contact employers in your area within your chosen industry.
Once successful ask your employer to call their local Apprenticeship Centre. They’ll help you both with all the relevant paperwork, including the sign-up to the National Training Contract.
