Great Barrier Reef Job: prospects

Barrier Reef prospects

Any Great Barrier Reef job is a wonderful opportunity to work in one of the world’s natural wonders. Here we spotlight some of the employment prospects.

Dive instructor
A common Great Barrier Reef job is to instruct the visitors who throng to the region to experience diving. This is a hugely rewarding job, as there aren’t that many people for whom a day at the office involves swimming amongst breathtaking shoals of tropical fish!

What you will require, apart from the requisite bundles of enthusiasm and communication skills, are appropriate qualifications:-

  • PADI instructor (renewed and insured)
  • Dive medical to AS2299 (renewed)
  • First Aid certificate
  • Advanced resuscitation/oxygen provider
  • Occupational health and safety at sea
  • Drivers licence

Watersports attendant
Attendants are responsible for providing instruction in all manner of watersports, from kayaks and sailing boats to jet-skis. You must be adept at handling the equipment yourself, have intensive knowledge of maintenance and repair, and be fully aware of any hazards your clients are likely to come across during their activities (the location of rocks, reefs as well as the presence of stinging jellyfish and other marine nasties!)

You should be adept at life-saving skills.

Beach attendant
A beach attendant carries and sets up chairs, umbrellas and cabanas for customers. They look after their clients’ needs, including providing menus, and serving snacks and drinks. At the end of the day they’re responsible for cleaning furniture and ensuring the beach area is tidy and uncluttered. Knowledge of first-aid and resuscitation is also important.
