Jobs Melbourne: jobs news

Melbourne jobs

Jobs Melbourne have taken a beating over recent months but there are signs of stability. Here we look hot topics affecting Australia’s second city.

New jobs
Jobs in Melbourne, as in other major cities across the country, received encouraging news from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. May’s employment report revealed 7,800 jobs were created, and while this fell far short of recent predictions by economists, there were signs of ‘green shoots’. Jobs Minister Chris Evans stated: ‘The latest figures show the resilience of Australia’s labour market. The figures show that in the past month we have seen a return to job creation’.

He added: With the unemployment rate expected to fall to 4.5 per cent by mid-2013, we're focused on building a bigger and better workforce that our economy needs’.

Forthcoming projects
Construction jobs will benefit from plans tabled by the Greek Orthodox community of Melbourne and Victoria for a cultural centre. This thirteen-storey tower, the Lonsdale Street Hellenic Cultural Centre, will benefit from a $2 million grant from the Victorian government.

The overall cost of the venture will be $20 million and building work is due to commence in the next few months, with a completion date set for 2013.

Melbourne construction workers will be keeping an eye on television! ABC is about to expand its inner-city premises and construct a new studio. The plans, approved by the board, will set out to construct the buildings adjacent to the existing radio and administration complex in the city’s Southbank neighbourhood.
