Part Time Jobs Melbourne: balancing work and study
Recent studies have shown that more and more Melbourne students are taking up part time work. Whether it’s to cover the costs of university, pay bills or fund a social life, part time jobs have become almost necessary for the modern student. Yet 69% of Melbourne students believe that employment has a negative impact on their studies. So how do you get the work/study balance right? Check out all your funding options Have you checked out federal government initiatives, your state or territory training authority and your university’s bursaries and grants scheme? You may also qualify for industry scholarships. Check online for student loans – a little extra help is preferable to overworking yourself! Don’t overdo it The national average for student employment is 14 hours a week. Studies have shown that working more than 15 hours a week can negatively impact your studies. If you’re a full time student, keep your hours to below this level. Try to work two long shifts rather than four short ones - it will free up more time. Keep everyone informed Be upfront about your commitments. Give your employer a copy of your university timetable or a list of times that you’re available to work. Let them know well in advance when your exams will be or if you’re going to have a heavy workload for a certain period. Your employer will appreciate that your studies need to take precedence. Likewise, your tutor will understand that you need to earn money. Speak to them if you’re having trouble and see if you can renegotiate tight deadlines. Look after yourself Be realistic about what you can do. You need time to relax and socialise. After all, your health is your most important asset. |
