Writing a resume for Nanny Jobs
Applying for nanny jobs can be a very different process to applying for other jobs. Parents only want the best for their children. The most important things to get across on your resume are that you are trustworthy, genuine and caring. Follow these tips to make sure that you have the right resume... Have an introduction at the top Most experts agree that an ‘Objective’ is optional on a standard resume. But for a nanny job, the introduction is critical. The danger of writing a nanny resume is that it will come across as too cold and almost ‘over-professional’. The parent needs to warm to you on a personal level, and having an introduction is a great way to accomplish this. Write a full paragraph (four lines is ideal) to outline why you enjoy working with children, what you can offer to an employer and a summary of your experience and qualifications. It’s ok to include personal statements (‘Growing up with three younger siblings, I’ve always wanted to be a nanny...’) and casual language (like ‘love’, ‘dreamed’ etc.). The important thing is that the introduction reflects your personality and passion. List five references ‘References available upon request’ is a classy way to finish most resumes, but it’s not a good idea on a nanny resume. A parent reading this will have a subconscious suspicion that you have something to hide. Having five references will allay any niggling doubts. List them prominently at the bottom of your resume. The references can be tutors, employers, someone you have babysat for... Character references are hugely important, and professional referees that can vouch for your character are ideal. Give their postal address and phone number as well as an email address (although it’s ok to add their preferred contact method). Also include their job title, their relationship to you (tutor, supervisor, family friend etc.) and a brief description of how you know each other (e.g. ‘I cared for her children over two consecutive summers’). Experience is more important than qualifications Having a childcare qualification is a huge bonus, so make sure you display it prominently! However when it comes to nanny jobs, experience is key. Put down every piece of relevant work experience you have – be it babysitting, tutoring, working in a nursery, or helping out at a summer scheme. It doesn’t matter if some of this was casual work – what you need to show is that you’re passionate about working with kids and dedicated to your career.
